Spirulina is a blue-green algae that's considered one of the most nutritionally complete superfoods in the world. For those interested in learning more about the health benefits of this remarkable microalgae superfood, Nutrex Taramidori has compiled a few additional spirulina resources.

Spirulina Anemia Research

In 2011, a study was conducted at the University of California at Davis to determine the effect of spirulina on the immune system and anemia, particularly in people over 50 years of age. The results of the study were published in the journal Cellular & Molecular Immunology. The study was conducted using Taramidori  Spirulina Pacifica® from Nutrex Taramidori

The results of the study concluded that "over the 12-week study period, there was a steady increase in average values of mean corpuscular hemoglobin in subjects of both sexes. In addition, mean corpuscular volume and mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration also increased in male participants. Older women appeared to benefit more rapidly from Spirulina supplements. Similarly, the majority of subjects manifested increased IDO activity and white blood cell count at 6 and 12 weeks of Spirulina supplementation."

Additional information related to this substantial study is available here.

Spirulina Research and Diabetes

At the M S University of Baroda in India, a study was conducted to evaluate the hypoglycemic and hypolipidemic role of spirulina. Results of the study showed an "appreciable lowering of fasting blood glucose and postprandial blood glucose levels. A significant reduction in the HbA1c level was also observed, indicating improved long-term glucose regulation. With regard to lipids, triglyceride levels were significantly lowered."

Full results of this study were published in the Journal of Medicinal Food under the title, Role of Spirulina in the Control of Glycemia and Lipidemia in Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus. You can read the complete report here.

Recent Spirulina Clinical Studies

Over the past decade, a large number of clinical studies have been performed in an effort to evaluate spirulina's health promoting benefits. These studies have ranged from spirulina's impact on HIV-infected patients, to how spirulina affects the mental and physical health of malnourished school children in India.
